Poker card rankings

The UK Gambling Commission describes poker as a game of ‘equal chance’. The game merits this description, as players bet against each other rather than a dealer. There are many varieties of the game including Texas Hold ‘Em, Stud Poker, Omaha and Five Card Draw, but the aim of the game remains the same, to win money through a combination of bluffing, luck and skill.

The first thing that any novice player should learn is the card rankings, as this will teach the player which cards to reject and which cards should be retained.

The best hand to hold is a straight flush, which means five cards from the same suit in descending order. The highest possible value of a straight flush is the royal flush, which starts at ten, and then raises sequentially right up to an ace.

Four of a kind is what is says, four cards which could be either four aces or four of any other same number. A 52-card deck will always have four suits and therefore, there is 13 ways to achieve a four of a kind.

A full house describes a hand that comprises three of a kind and a pair. For example, three queens and a pair of sixes would constitute a full house.

A flush denotes five cards in the same suit. The highest card of a flush will denote the winner, should two players be holding a flush.

A straight is where five cards are in running order, but in different suits.

Three of a kind is next on the ranking list and is followed in importance and value by two pairs.

Going down the list in value are pairs. If two players hold a pair, the person with the highest value pair will win the hand.

The lowest value is a high card. If none of the players holds any of the recognised rankings, the card that is the highest will denote the winner.

Chuck-a-luck

Chuck-a-luck, or Birdcage, is a game of chance played with dice, popular in casinos and often used in charity fundraisers.

Chuck-a-luck begins when the dealer rotates a cage shaped like an hourglass.  The cage houses three standard dice.  Punters bet on the possible combinations of the three dice when they land following its rotation.

There are various bets available to punters playing chuck-a-luck.  A ‘single dice bet’ requires the punter to decide on the specific numbers which will appear.  Odds of 10 to1 are usually offered when three dice are being used.  ‘Any triple’ bets payout when all three dice show the same value.  This wager has higher odds of 30 to 1.  A ‘big’ bet pays out when the sum of the values of each dice adds up to more than eleven.  This bet has odds of 1 to 1.  A ‘small’ bet will payout when the sum of the values of each dice does not exceed ten.  This wager has odds of 1 to 1.  A ‘field’ bet will payout when the sum of the values of each dice is less than eight or exceeds twelve.  This wager also has odds of 1 to 1.

Basics of Blackjack Strategy

Whether playing blackjack online or at a table in a casino, using a proper basic blackjack strategy of play will give the player the best house edge possible and an advantage over his fellow players. Starting with a simplified strategy based on hard hands, soft hands and pairs, is the best place to start.

Hard Hands

A hard hand in blackjack is a hand with no ace or if an ace is present, it must be counted as a one. If the hand total is nine or lower, it is best to hit and be dealt another card. If the total is between 10 and 16, the next move is determined by the dealer’s up card. If the hand equals 17 or more, stand.

Soft Hands

In a soft hand, the ace counts as 11 instead of one. Hit if the total is 17 or lower. If the total is 18, hit only if the dealer’s up card is six or less and if the total is 19, let it stand.

Pairs

To split or not to split is always the question when it comes to pairs. Splitting effectively gives the player two hands to work with and an extra chance to come out ahead in the hand. A pair of aces or eights should always be split, while 10s, fours and fives should never be split. All other pairs can be split when the dealer’s up card is a six or less.
